![]() | K-9 SAR is a very rewarding, but demanding experience. SAR work requires sharp mental and good physical conditioning as well as 24 hour availability. Our unit will respond day or night, in any weather and over any terrain. The success of the unit depends on people who are committed and can work well as part of a team. Getting a K-9 team to certified status is serious work and usually takes about two years of active training in obedience and search techniques. D.A.W.G.S. has unit trainings twice each month. Also, you must be able to commit to training two to three times per week on your own and with others on the team. Travel can be extensive because we travel all over Connecticut as well as into Massachusetts for our trainings. SAR work is a major commitment in time and energy as well as financially. Because we are a volunteer unit, each member is responsible for purchasing gear to properly outfit him or her (and your canine partner) to spend at least 24 hours in the woods. You must be willing to pay all your own expenses for seminars and conferences.
