Basic Requirements to Attain Status of Certified Field Assistant

Each trainee must demonstrate proficiency in the following skills:

  • 1. Map and Compass
  • 2. Scent Behavior
  • 3. Search Strategy and Tactics
  • 4. Crime Scene Preservation
  • 5. CPR & First Aid
  • 6. K-9 First Aid
  • 7. Radio Operational Procedures
  • 8. Physical Fitness

Certification Canine Testing Process: Certified Handlers

The Certification Canine Testing Process consists of a Basic Obedience Test, an Advanced Obedience Test and five Search Tests.

Search Tests for Level 2 (probationary) Operational Status:

  • Test 1. Trail Problem - 1 victim
  • Test 2. Area Problem - 40-60 acres with 1 victim
  • Test 3. Night Area Problem - 10-30 acres with 1 victim
Search Tests for Level 1 (full) Operational Status:
  • Test 4. Area Problem - 80-100 acres with 0-2 victims total
  • Test 5. Night Area Problem - 30-40 acres with 0-2 victims total
